You may have seen people wearing what looks to be a wristwatch at Disney Parks, but everyone is wearing them and they all look similar. This is a MagicBand, and it plays several roles during your time at Disney World resorts and theme parks. MagicBands are accessories packed with essential features at Disney Parks and Resorts, combining ticketing, room access, payment method, and Lightning Lane admission into one accessory. Just link your MagicBand to your My Disney Experience app, and voila, ya got Disney World at your actual fingertips.
Disney World MagicBand and MagicBand+ Features, Differences and Similarities
There is a difference between a standard Disney World MagicBand and the upgraded MagicBand+. While both versions offer the same basic functionalities, the features of MagicBand+ takes your experience to the next level with some seriously cool features. You can interact with select attractions and experiences throughout the parks, unlocking special surprises - your MagicBand+ will light up during the fireworks, for instance, and will buzz and sparkle while walking around the parks when you near an attraction that it interacts with.
With the MagicBand+, it's not just about riding the rides – it's about becoming part of the story. And if your MagicBand+ happen to lose it's charge during the day, it still behaves like a normal MagicBand, just without all the extra lights and vibrations.
And let's not forget about the photo opportunities – because let's be honest, what's a Disney vacation without photos to remember it by? MagicBand links seamlessly to your PhotoPass account, so you can enjoy hassle-free photo capture and instant access to your digital memories. Just tap your MagicBand to your ride photo when exiting, or with a cast member at PhotoPass locations around the parks, and the picture will show up within minutes, right in your app.
Bonus Tip: Order your MagicBand or MagicBand + ahead of time for savings up to 50%!
Should I Purchase a MagicBand, though?
If you choose not to purchase a MagicBand or MagicBand+, the good news is that your My Disney Experience app on your smartphone will do all the things it does as well. You can use your phone to tap in to the parks, unlock your resort door, and pay for merchandise. The biggest downside to using your phone for these features is the hit it takes on your battery life, so make sure to bring a backup charger if you prefer to use your iPhone or Android over a MagicBand.
You can buy a single Fuel Rod for $30 at several locations at the theme parks, resorts, and Disney Springs, and swap out your depleted Fuel Rod throughout the day for no charge for a new one. We prefer to purchase them on Amazon, and get pack of two for $35 for our park days. These little guys come in very handy!
Another bonus for using a MagicBand is added the hassle of needing to get your phone out of your bag or pocket every time you want to board an attraction, pay for food, etc. It's much easier to simply tap your wrist and be on your way!
Lastly, we have found that after a long day at the parks, having a wearable door key strapped to your wrist, all while carrying a sleeping kiddo, or managing several bags of merchandise, comes in very handy when getting into your hotel late at night...
